500 yen rice bowls at the Hakodate Morning Market

This post is unrelated to onsen.

If you travel Hakodate, Hokkaido on a tight budget, why don't you try one of the "500 yen don" or 500 yen rice bowls at the morning market just next to the Hakodate Railway Station?

There are many restaurants to serve fresh seafood at the market, and I found a place serving a bowl of rice topped with fresh seafood for just 500 yen among other places charging nearly or more than 2000 yen.

Gomoku or Mix don (upper left); Salmon roe don (upper right); Crab meat don (lower left); the restaurant, Ekini Shijo located upper floor (lower right)

I think you'll like them if you like sushi. There is no menu in English, but Japanese menu carries pictures of each rice bowl, so you can order just pointing a picture. Served with miso soup and pickles. Opens 6:30 AM till 2:30 PM everyday.

  2. Hi Rashai!

Yes, there is a morning market just west of the Hakodate Railway Station. Most shops and restaurants are located at ground level, so I think you can find this Ekinin Shijo restaurant at upper level. They serve 800 yen don as well.

  4. Hi Rashai!
There are many onsens in central Hakodate. You can visit Yunokawa Onsen or Yachigashira Onsen easily, both of them located near terminal station of tramway.

Tokyo eateries....too many. If you look for budget ones, I think I can recommend some Ramen Shop near your hotel. As for upmarket restaurants, if you know me your budget, I think I can name some of the recommendable restaurants.

  5. Once again, thanks for your helpful info.

I got a bad habit when it comes to food, especially Japanese food, as long as it's authentic local food, I wouldn't mind the price, but normally I don't go to the fancy ones, I'd rather sitting in a nice food shack with good sake in Meguro than the one around Ginza :)
I just remembered something, I never tried 'fugu' before, do you think it's worth the risk ? ha..ha.. Please advise me, I'd go for any Japanese food! ramen, yakitori, teriyaki, otoro sushi, wagyu steak.. :)
